Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittany Harris.
Brittany, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I’ve always had dreams of creating something of my own but never had the time or money to do so. As soon as I got out of the military, life happened marriage, college, kids then work and then more work. Now, I’m to the point where I’m tired of work. We spend at least 40 hours a week working a meaningless job, chained to a desk and phone, then we’re told when we get in our 60’s, we can retire and enjoy life. Literally, that entire time that we’re working is spent on progressing another person’s dreams while ours are put on the back burner. And I’m just done. It’s time for me to explore my passions so a few years ago, I embarked on a journey of becoming a handbag designer. Although it was fun, it was also very expensive. I remember getting my first handbag sample and just being so disappointed lol I couldn’t believe that spent over $2,000 on a piece of trash. It was horrible and it really made me question myself. Was it the manufacture that was bad or was it my vision? Although it was an expensive failure, it was a risk I was willing to take.
I also tried the stock market but after losing $100.00 in a matter of seconds, I decided I need to do more research.
I ended up slipping into depression and I became very discouraged. I began to feel trapped. I currently work in the type of industry where it’s very easy to become comfortable and locked in. Thirty years who have gone by and you have nothing to show for it.
Luckily, I have the greatest husband ever who is always there to listen to me vent and yell. I started pouring my feelings out to him and with no hesitation or thought, he simply said” why don’t cha just start small? Do some socks or something.” Ever since then Audacious Sock Wear has been up and running. I still work my regular 9-5 but every sock sold, every post and like is one step closer to me being a free woman. And that’s what Audacious Sock Wear is all about! Being bold and taking the risk! When I started ASW a year ago, I had no idea we’d be where we are now! We are truly blessed and are looking forward to what the future holds.
I still work a regular 9-5 but every sock sold, every post and social media like is one step closer to me being a free woman.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Nope! We’ve been swindled a few times and conquering social media was a struggle at first. One particular incident that sticks out involves a shopping network that reached out to us advising that they wanted Audacious Sock Wear to be included on their shopping platform. We were supposed to have all these ads, commercials and customers lined up at the door! We were so excited and happy to be on board! $200 later and we here we are, no ad, no commercials and no sales. Looking back, we should’ve seen this scammer coming a mile away but you live and you learn. In regards to social media, we’ve dealt with little sock beef and inconsistent influencers but it’s all part of the game.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
We are a local sock company that specializes in bold socks! We are not for the ho-hum and mundane, We’re for those people who love to take the risk and be in their own world. One of the things that really sets us apart is our story.
With other sock companies, they only put the focus on your socks. Cool socks! Funky styles blah blah blah! With Audacious Sock Wear, we want to put the focus on your feet AND your life. We want you to conquer the world in our socks.
And lastly, we do everything as a family, no seriously, it’s me, my husband and our little ones making this happen. There’s no big company backing us, there are no investors and we’re not part of a bigger company. It’s just us making the dream work with teamwork and a little faith!
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success to me means being able to accomplish whatever goals you set for yourself or business. Success and goal setting go hand in hand. There are no set criteria for success, either you’ve achieved it or not. However, there are criteria in regards to goal setting which leads to success. What are you trying to achieve? What’s your action plan? What are your time frames? Once you figure out what you’re trying to do, then you can determine the probability of success.
